Christmas Competition

We asked you to solve five simple anagrams to reveal pairs of individuals currently or recently hogging the headlines, and to supply a similar anagram of your own.

The response we had was very encouraging, indicating a great love of anagrams by the population at large, or else a lot of people with nothing better to do!

The correct answers of the anagrams (for the benefit of those driven to distraction by the competition) were:

C.E. HELPED TRAIN BARRISTER FOE - Cherie Blair and Peter Foster

US BOSS MADE DANGER IN HUGE DASH - George Bush and Saddam Hussein

LA LA! MALE DANGLING HERO Liam and Noel Gallagher

WELL! SPARKLERS HARRIDAN IN LACE MECCA BOP - Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles

CHAMP D - HE DO DIVINE BACKPASS - David Beckham and Posh Spice

In accordance with the rules, the winner, drawn at random out of a hatful of correct results, was Brian Collier of Stratford-upon-Avon. Congratulations Brian! A bottle of Top Bubbly is winging its way to you. Brian's own contribution was:

[Anagram] = RIVAL IDOL SONG DUET ARE ON CUE
[Answer] = One True Voice and Girls Aloud

Some of the others which made us chuckle were:

[Anagram] = BARE SPY IN RE-HARDEN BONER CALL
[Answer] = Pierce Brosnan and Halle Berry

[Anagram] = A G-GREAT SONG? YETH! - A DULL WIN!
[Answer] = Will Young and Gareth Gates

[Anagram] = MY VENOM INJURING MY DEEJAY!
[Answer] = Jimmy Young and Jeremy Vine

Thanks to everyone who participated, better luck next time...only 342 days to go until next Christmas!

News From Seltek

At Seltek we can report a modest but encouraging 7.4% rise in the number of jobs available at the end of the fourth quarter of 2002, compared to the end of the third quarter. But don't take our word for the slow but steady improvement in the job market. Here are some highlights from the Deloitte & Touche sponsored REC (Recruitment & Employment Confederation) January 2003 report:

  • Permanent staff placements rose for the tenth consecutive month in December
  • Permanent salaries rose for the third month in a row, with the rate of increase the fastest since June
  • Average weekly billings received by recruitment agencies from the employment of temporary and contract staff rose for the twelfth month in a row in December

Let's not be mistaken: the employment market remains subdued, and the increases reported above are fractional. However, all the signs and forecasts that we have been able to perceive, suggest a slow but steady improvement throughout 2003, with good times ahead.

Reasons to be cheerful - part two!

Comic Cuts

A cat dies and goes to Heaven. God meets him at the gate and says, 'You've been a good cat all of these years. Anything you desire is yours, all you have to do is ask.'

The cats says, 'Well, I lived all my life with a poor family on a farm and had to sleep on hardwood floors.' God says, 'Say no more.' And instantly, a fluffy pillow appears. A few days later, 6 mice are killed in a tragic accident and they go to Heaven. God meets them at the gate with the same offer that He made the cat.

The mice said, 'All our lives we've had to run. We've been chased by cats, dogs and even women with brooms. If we could only have a pair of roller skates, we wouldn't have to run anymore.' God says, 'Say no more.' And instantly, each mouse is fitted with a beautiful pair of tiny roller skates.

About a week later, God decides to check and see how the cat is doing. The cat is sound asleep on his new pillow. God gently wakes him and asks,

'How are you doing? Are you happy here?'

The cat yawns and stretches and says, 'Oh, I've never been happier in my life. And those Meals on Wheels you've been sending over are the best!

(Bears out the old adage: one man struggles, while another relaxes! Ed.)
